FAQs
Artificial intelligence is poised to fundamentally change how healthcare is delivered to patients and the ways in which drugs are developed. But to build impactful artificial intelligence, you need high quality patient data. Every day when practitioners work with patients, they generate data that can be harnessed for AI to power scientific breakthroughs.
At Owkin, working with partners is core to what we do - leveraging patient data in combination with the latest machine learning science to deliver better drugs and diagnostics at scale. We believe that AI should be an open book so we can all understand how to best use that data for the benefit of patients. That’s why we created the A to Z of AI in healthcare: an accessible guide of bite-sized explanations to help people understand the core concepts of AI and their applications in the field of medicine and research.
Each letter covers a key topic. Readers can toggle between a brief or more detailed explanation to understand how these concepts are used in healthcare today, and the impact they will have in the future.
A team of experts from Owkin which included data scientists, medical professionals and science communicators and Jess Morley, a Postdoctoral Researcher from Yale Digital Ethics Centre, collaborated to select a range of topics that are central to understanding AI and its role in healthcare.
The 26 topics chosen are not an exhaustive list. Rather, they represent a selection of topics that serves as an introduction for first-timers and an intermediate guide to those seeking a more thorough understanding of this field. The team included topics that range from the practical to the philosophical to capture the breadth of this nascent field. To make the selection more intuitive, we’ve grouped the terms as follows: AI basics, data, applied AI and fairness and responsibility. A key driver in the topic selection was to ensure broad appeal amongst practising clinicians, nurses, researchers and patients interested in AI.
The A-Z will be updated periodically as new technologies gain traction in the healthcare sector and as existing technologies and ways of thinking continue to evolve.
